The Hilliard Ensemble
«LOVE AMONG THE RUINS»
«A haunting, beautiful and absolutely perfect monument to vocalism» (C. Moreni). This was how the press described the Hilliard Ensemble during their recent Italian tour, that in February 2004 celebrated its 30 th anniversary. Recordings for EMI, Virgin and ECM have become legendary and have revealed the enchantment of the medieval and Renaissance repertoire to many generations. They also clearly indicated how the paths of ancient and contemporary music can converge in a suggestive way. The CD Officium , the result of an encounter with the saxophonist Jan Garbarek, was greeted as «one of the greatest successes for cross-over music during the Nineties; even before recording began for Arvo's Passio, Pärt has started to work with the most important composers of our times, now present with music dedicated to the ensemble in the double CD A Hilliard Songbook . The ensemble, which has performed at premiers with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Colin Davis, the London Philharmonic and Kent Nagano, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic conducted by Lorin Maazel, presents Love among the Ruins , a musical project ranging from Henry VIII to Gavin Bryars.
