Kim Kashkashian “merges untiring musical intelligence and a great beauty of sound” ( San Francisco Chronicle ), “ a rich timbre and amazing talent” ( New York Times ). She recently performed as a soloist with orchestras in Berlin, London, Vienna, New York, Milan, Munich and Tokyo conducted by Muti, Chailly and Eschenbach. She has played with various chamber music groups, with the Tokyo, Guarnieri and Galimir quartets, and has been a member of a “unique” quartet created by Gidon Kremer, Daniel Phillips and Yo-Yo Ma. Her CDs for DGG, Sony, ECM, include absolute classics but also new compositions arising from cooperation with Penderecki, Kurtág, Gubajdulina, Pärt and Eötvös. Born in Detroit to a family of Armenian origin, Kim Kashkashian never forgets her roots and, like the legendary Kathy Berberian, likes to play her country's traditional music. Today her programme, in a duo with the American percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky, begins in fact with Traditional Armenian Songs by the Rev. Father Komidas and ends with Luciano Berio's Naturale for viola, percussions and tape.
