Franco D'Andrea - Riff Trio
Franco D’Andrea is an artist who does not
need a presentation. In 2005 Top Jazz voted him
the best musician of the year, however, the list
of the awards he has won is immensely long: Music
Critics’ Award (1979, 1981), RadioUno Jazz
Award (1982), Top Jazz Award (1982, 1984, 1985,
1986, 1987), Award to Franco d’Andrea’s
Quartet for the best Italian group (1986), Prize
for best Italian recording (1984, 1986, 2002),
and so on… His adventures in the world of
music began in the Roman avant-garde environment
of the Sixties. Then came his enlightening encounter
with Gato Barbieri, who involved him in the extraordinary
adventure that was the recording of the soundtrack
for the film Last tango in Paris. Then came his
experiences with the Modern Art Trio together
with Franco Tonani and Bruno Tommaso, and the
creation of his own quartet. Franco D’Andrea’s
personal story, that of a musician at 360 degrees,
follows and interacts with the history of great
international jazz. Among his most recent and
most original creations there is the Riff Trio
with Fabrizio Bosso at the trumpet and Gianluca
Petrella at the trombone, his travelling companions
in a research of sound that is almost abstract
but always enlivened by the warmth of the most
authentic jazz tradition.
