Calefax
Calefax is definable as a classical ensemble
with a contemporary and pop mentality.
Following the tradition of Renaissance wind instrument
groups, all the members of Calefax believe in
fact that an authentic instrumentalist should
not only play existing repertoires, but also arrange,
transcribe, compose and recompose all kinds of
music. For this reason their performances,
always very spectacular and not only thanks to
their technical virtuosity, embrace a repertoire
covering at least seven centuries and in their
hands all sounds, both new and old, are fresh,
colourful and lively. For their first tour
of Sicily, Calefax have chosen a programme that
exemplifies their way of making music; a programme
“for four hands” in which each piece
is presented in a transcription very different
to the that of the original version, so that the
sound image of the ancient composer is instantly
superimposed by another, distant in the centuries
and with a different musical taste. Founded in
Holland seventeen years ago, Calefax has won the
Philip Morris Art Prize and the Classical Music
Award 2005. Last season the group made its debut
in China, at the Oslo Festival , in Sweden and
in Estonia, and also held a series of concerts
in London.
