Gianni Coscia - Gianluigi Troversi
A great deal is said nowadays about the dichotomy
of the “two Weills”: the composer
of the German years spent close to Hindemith,
and that of the songs for Broadway of the American
years, who worked with the tradition of musicals,
the traditional theatre and the cinema. According
to Gianluigi Trovesi and Gianni Coscia this dichotomy
does not exist, because both despised distinctions
between “high” and “low”
art, with the same awareness experience by Weill,
that one can discover great music in the streets
just as much as in concert halls. They also believe
it is possible to amuse oneself with all styles,
enjoying this, albeit presenting the more serious
contents. Round about Weill is one of
their projects, recorded for ECM in un CD the
booklet of which is signed by Umberto Eco. There
we find pieces by Weill, but also free meditations
on Weill, new music created from the polyphonies
of Coscia’s accordion and sounds that are
almost Kletzmer from Trovesi’s clarinet,
as well as sound memories of post-war traditional
Italy. The starting point is entitled Rise
and fall of the city of Mahagonny. But there
is also Tango Ballade from The threepenny
Opera, and a great deal from the world of
Brecht-Weill around which the duo moves with creativity
and imagination, returning it in a new form always
remaining respectful of its original spirit.
