Rimskij-Korsakov
Quartet
The Rimskij-Korsakov Quartet is a chamber music
ensemble that has performed most of the 20th century’s
musical history. Created as a permanent ensemble
in 1939, this quartet continued to play marked
by the best Russian tradition of team work and
extremely high professionalism. As is inevitable,
over time its members changed. The current musicians
were recently the stars at the Berlin Philharmonic
of the very first performance of Hans Werner Henze’s
Quintet for strings and piano in the presence
of the composer himself. The concert for the Laudamo
Philharmonic includes one authentic rarity; a
selection from Les vendredis, and hence from that
vast repertoire of chamber music that is however
very pleasant and filled with nationalistic tension,
played at the “musical Fridays” held
at Mitrofan Petrovic Beliajev’s home, the
great patron in Saint Petersburg who gathered
around himself young talents such as Borodin,
Ljadov, Glazunov and not last Nikolaj Rimskij-Korsakov,
with 2008 marking the centenary of his death.
